My History and Philosophy
My journey into midwifery started with my first birth, which was a very disappointing cesarean section. I knew that there was a better way to birth and became fascinated with pregnancy, birth, and educating women about their bodies. I feel that society has lost the spiritual side of pregnancy and childbirth, and so has lost the true sense of being a mother. I was drawn to homebirth because it preserves the spiritual, emotional, and physical understanding of pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. And eight years and a midwife's apprenticeship later, I had two wonderful home births of my own.
I believe that:
- Each pregnancy and birth is different, requiring individualized, personal support and care.
- Pregnancy and birth are normal parts of life and rarely need interventions.
- Women have the right to pick where and how they want to birth.
- An important role of the midwife is to preserve the intimacy of birth.
- When birth unfolds on its own, and a woman listens to her body and acts accordingly, birth progresses better.
- Birth is a universal journey that changes our lives forever: we all move, moan, and have moments where we struggle and need to lean on someone.
- When families are informed of all their choices, they can make the best decisions for the health and well-being of mom and baby.
